Movement and interaction mechanisms
AK-xolotl features a top-down perspective. In AK-xolotl, you control an Axolotl, wielding a weapon and attacking enemies. The game has fairly simple controls; you can use the joystick on the left to control the Axolotl. The joystick allows for 360-degree control, providing a very smooth control experience, unlike other games in the genre that only allow control in 8 directions.
In certain locations, such as NPCs or signs, AK-xolotl will display interactive virtual keys at the bottom of the screen. These virtual keys clearly indicate the actions you can perform on these interactive objects. For example, “Interact” to interact, “Talk” to exchange information, “Buy” to buy or sell, etc. You need to pay attention to interacting with all objects or NPCs to avoid missing opportunities to obtain valuable cards or weapons.
Combat mechanism in AK-Xolotl
As mentioned above, in AK-xolotl’s gameplay, you control an Axolotl armed with a weapon and shoot all other animals that oppose you. You can use the right joystick to shoot and aim. Similar to the movement mechanism, the attack joystick also allows you to shoot 360 degrees. Besides attacking, you can also engage in melee combat, dodge, and use skills.
You can carry a maximum of 2 weapons in AK-xolotl battles. The game features a total of 84 different weapons with diverse mechanics and uses. Unlike other games of the same genre, weapons have limited ammunition. Guns have magazine and reserve ammunition. After firing all the ammunition in the magazine, the AK-xolotl will enter reload mode before it can fire again. Melee weapons also have a limited number of bullets, corresponding to the number of attacks that can be performed, and do not have reserve ammunition. Weapons become completely useless when all the ammunition in the gun or the number of uses for melee weapons is exhausted.
Axolotl’s dodging skills
Dodge is a very powerful mechanic in the AK-xolotl. It allows you to move forward quickly a considerable distance, potentially up to three times the length of the Axolotl’s body. Importantly, while dodging, all enemy attacks and bullets will not damage you. You can also use dodge to move through enemies or to cross bodies of water.
In AK-xolotl, dodges have no cooldown; you can use a dodge immediately after the previous one is complete. However, there is a small delay between dodges, and you can still be hit during this time. Note that you cannot attack enemies while dodging. Some upgrade cards will allow you to overcome this weakness by creating an attack while using a dodge.
Roguelite gameplay
AK-xolotl features gameplay designed in the style of rougelite and bullet hell, a very popular design in indie games today. The game’s content is divided into levels and areas. Each level has many different zones. Completing all zones in a level means completing that level, and AK-xolotl will unlock the next level with a higher difficulty. During gameplay, you will have the opportunity to receive upgrade cards and weapons to become stronger after each zone.
After you are defeated in any area, the AK-xolotl will delete all upgrade cards and weapons you received in that level. The next time you return, you will have to replay the level from the beginning with nothing. However, after the defeat, you will still receive gold and Axolotl eggs. These will be two resources to help you become slightly stronger before returning to fight.
Many Axolotls for you to discover
AK-xolotl features a total of 83 different Axolotls. Each Axolotl has a unique design, each with its own hilarious characteristics. In terms of gameplay, all Axolotls have stats for health, speed, armor, and a special ability. However, the starting stats and special abilities of each Axolotl are different and complement each other. This means that an Axolotl with high health will have a weak or no special ability. Conversely, an Axolotl with a powerful special ability will have to sacrifice health.
Mechanism for raising Axolotls
This is a crucial mechanism in AK-xolotl, providing a significant progression element to the game. At the starting base of AK-xolotl is a garden where baby Axolotls are nurtured. Upon returning from battles, one or more Axolotl eggs will appear in the garden. You can use the hatching feature to hatch the eggs and create baby Axolotls. Baby Axolotls can be fed to grow. Once an Axolotl reaches maturity, it is considered a newly unlocked Axolotl and can be selected to participate in AK-xolotl levels.
