Cat Quest game series by The Gentlebros is probably familiar to many players. Following the two previous games, the developer The Gentlebros released a third game titled Cat Quest III. Upon its release, the game quickly received many positive reviews from platforms like Steam, with over 90% positive player ratings and recommendations from many critics. So what makes Cat Quest III so interesting? Let’s find out in this article.
Introduce about Cat Quest III
First released in August 2024, Cat Quest III was initially only available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It wasn’t until 2026 that the game officially became available on mobile platforms. Boasting groundbreaking gameplay compared to its predecessors, Cat Quest III offers a fresh experience with much more to offer. With Cat Quest III, a new era of pirate cats awaits you.
A brand new cat pirate setting
Unlike the previous two installments with their familiar cat kingdom setting, Cat Quest III takes us to a new story. No longer deep inland with the war between dogs and cats, this time we venture out to sea to mysterious islands. This region is known as the Purribean – a place inspired by the Caribbean. Of course, when you think of the Caribbean, you think of pirates, right?
As a pirate cat raised by the spirit of Captain Cappey, after 15 years we officially begin our journey to conquer Purribean. Specifically, this place hides the legendary treasure, the North Star – a treasure possessing the power to change the world. Many forces have been eyeing this treasure, yet it has yet to be found. Perhaps only our pirate cat, with his mysterious mark, can accomplish this.
Gameplay
As mentioned above, Cat Quest III boasts a style and gameplay with many new features compared to its two predecessors. The biggest change is perhaps in the controls; now you no longer tap to move, but swipe to move using a virtual joystick located all over the screen. Furthermore, the combat, interaction, and movement buttons are now located on the right side – a feature very similar to many modern ARPGs.
Personally, I feel that this change unintentionally diminishes the distinctive control scheme of the Cat Quest series. However, it also makes Cat Quest III much more accessible. Additionally, our pirate cat has lost a companion like the Dog King from the Cat Quest 2, but you can still use co-op mode to conquer the game with friends. Besides island battles, the game also features quite interesting naval battles, which we’ll explore in more detail below.
Engage in cat-and-mouse battles at sea
When talking about pirates, you definitely have to mention pirate ships with powerful cannons. Cat Quest III is no different; our pirate cat also possesses a cool and powerful warship. It appears at the beginning of the game, and you need to defeat a boss called the Rat King to find the key to this ship. With this warship, you can travel the seas and use your cannons to defeat your enemies.
Cannons have a long range and powerful destructive force, so you can definitely use them to attack enemies on the islands. Of course, larger ships are more vulnerable to gunfire, and controlling the firing direction isn’t easy. Remember your warship has a limited amount of health, so avoid taking too many hits. Also, there are some powerful sea monsters; don’t engage them until you’ve mastered your abilities.
Explore the islands in Cat Quest III
Stepping into Purribean means arriving in a vast ocean dotted with numerous islands. Most islands in Cat Quest III are relatively small, some even so small that you can traverse the entire landmass in just 3-5 seconds. However, each island possesses unique characteristics; larger islands often feature NPCs and specific quests, while smaller islands typically contain dungeons or puzzles with valuable rewards.
Some islands you can explore:
- Pawt Purvanna: A fairly large and important island in Cat Quest III. It features numerous dungeons that can help you familiarize yourself with the combat mechanics and exploration.
- Code Island: Contains a small puzzle with a valuable item as a reward.
- Lone Island: An isolated island that requires considerable time to find.
- Catpuga, Purricade Island: Home to many rat pirates. A dangerous place, but also one where you can acquire many valuable items.
