Arena layout design
Tower defense strategy is the core element of Clash of Critters gameplay. The tower defense aspect is designed to be quite similar to Plants vs. Zombies – an extremely popular tower defense game. Clash of Critters’s tower defense levels are designed vertically, with the battlefield layout consisting of squares divided into columns.
The battlefield in the early levels will have only a single column. As the game progresses, the battlefield in later levels will increase to 3 columns, up to a maximum of 5 columns. The lower part of the battlefield is where you place your Pokémon and defenses, while the upper part is where the zombies start.
Pet placement mechanics in Clash of Critters
In the game, you will place your pet into a designated space within the lower part of the arena. You cannot place them outside the designated space or in a space already occupied by a pet. You can tap once on the avatar of the Pokémon you want to place, and it will automatically be placed in the most suitable space.
For a pet already placed, you can hold and move it to another empty space within the designated area. This process can be shortened by directly dragging and dropping the pet from the interface into the desired empty space within the designated area. To remove a pet from the arena, simply tap once on the pet you wish to remove.
The top part of the battlefield is where the zombies start. During the troop placement phase, the game displays an interface showing which types of zombies will appear in the battle, their attributes, and the types of zombies that appear in each column. You can click on the icon of each zombie type in the interface. The Clash of Critters notification interface lists the type, column, and attributes of the boss if the level has a boss.
However, the game will not show the specific number of zombies. Additionally, if any zombie type can move between columns, or can summon minions from other columns, the game will not inform you. Therefore, be sure to check the information of the zombie types before starting the battle and try to keep all columns defended by troops.
Combat mechanism
Both the beast and zombie factions will fight automatically. After you press the virtual “Battle” button, the battle will begin, and you can no longer intervene on the battlefield. Your beasts and zombies will have their own attack ranges, and they will attack opponents within their range. Each unit, whether on the beast or zombie side, has a certain amount of health. If their health runs out, they will be destroyed. Some special units can heal themselves or their allies.
Clash of Critters features an elemental system. The game has five elements, which counter each other in a circular pattern. The elements in the game are arranged according to the principle that the element before counters the element after: water, fire, grass, earth, electricity, and water. Each type of war beast will possess at least one of these elements. For zombies, some types will possess an element, while others will not. Attacks from a unit to a target will deal 100% damage if it doesn’t counter the target’s element. If the unit’s element counters the target’s element, the attack will deal 200% damage.
Conversely, if a unit has a type disadvantage compared to the target, its attacks will only deal 50% damage. This mechanism applies to both zombies and beasts. For zombies without a type disadvantage, the damage they receive will always be 100%, regardless of the beast’s type.
Upgrade activities
The upgrade activity is designed around a unique pinball minigame in Clash of Critters. You can enable auto-battle for your war beast, then switch to the pinball interface. Here, use the “Pinball” machine to shoot balls into the reward chamber. Whichever reward slot the ball lands in will give you the reward for that slot. The reward chamber also has two special reward buttons; the energy of these buttons will accumulate when balls hit them. In addition, there is a special hole in the middle of the reward chamber; if any ball falls into and stays there, you will have a chance to receive a reward card.
The mechanics of the marble launcher are entirely based on physics. It’s also the only content that provides experience points for your creatures to level up. The marble launcher in Clash of Critters also gives you a chance to obtain new creatures through reward cards or smaller minigames.
