From its very name, Gladihoppers, the game reveals its humorous design. Gladi (gladiator) combined with hoppers forms the core gameplay element. Gladihoppers features one-on-one battles between gladiators. They engage in life-or-death battles for glory, while the defeated pay with their lives.
However, the fighters in the world of Gladihoppers don’t fight in the usual way. They wield weapons with blazing killing intent, but their feet hop like kangaroos, creating a playful style of gameplay that contrasts with the bloody setting the game establishes.
Combat mechanism
The entire content of Gladihoppers revolves around one-on-one duels between hopscotch fighters. Your fighter starts on the right side of the arena, while your opponent starts on the opposite side. You can control your fighter to jump forward or backward using two virtual buttons on the left side of the screen. On the right side of the screen are three virtual attack buttons corresponding to high, side, and low attacks. Next to the attack buttons are a virtual button to use a secondary weapon (raise a shield if the secondary weapon is a shield) and a virtual button to attack unarmed.
Attacks from your Gladihoppers will deal damage if they hit the opponent’s body. Damage is reduced if the attack hits a shield or weapon while the opponent is also attacking. Headshots are guaranteed to deal critical damage. However, you shouldn’t overuse high hits to attack the head. The opponent can use a shield or high hit at the same time as you to block. Worse, if the opponent takes advantage of the opportunity and attacks other parts of your body early, your Gladiator will almost certainly be hit.
Tactical elements in every arena battle
The kangaroo-like hopping mechanism of the Gladihoppers’ fighters isn’t just for comedic effect. This mechanism actually adds a lot of tactical depth to the gameplay. Each hop moves the character forward or backward further than normal walking. This means the movement mechanics in Gladihoppers can lead to significant positional errors compared to the player’s calculations.
In Gladihoppers, a misplaced forward jump can put your fighter within attack range, putting them in danger. Conversely, a poor backward jump can put your fighter far from their opponent, causing you to miss an attack or land an inaccurate blow. Therefore, position and distance are two crucial elements in Gladihoppers strategy. The tactical importance of these two elements is amplified in high-difficulty battles, where enemies are so powerful they can take you down with just one or two successful hits.
Power progression mechanism
Each time you win a battle, you’ll receive gold and fame points. Once you have enough fame points, your fighter will level up, become stronger, and gain additional stat points to upgrade their stats. There are three types of stats on a fighter: strength (STR), endurance (END), and hit points (HP). Strength determines the damage dealt by a hit. Conversely, endurance reduces the amount of damage taken if the fighter is hit. HP is the same as in other games. Once HP runs out, the fighter is defeated.
Gold is the most important currency in Gladihoppers. Owning gold allows you to upgrade equipment and hire trainers to assist your fighters in battle. Upgrading your fighter’s stats doesn’t require gold, but upgrading equipment does. You should use gold to upgrade equipment if you’re having difficulty in battles. Additionally, you should save gold to upgrade to better equipment that you might acquire later.
Weapons and shields
Gladihoppers boasts an incredibly diverse weapon and shield system. Weapons include swords, greatswords, battle axes, spears, lances, maces, and more. Weapons are categorized by two stats: damage and range. Each weapon type has its own strengths and weaknesses. Heavy weapons like battle axes deal very high damage but have a short range. Conversely, long weapons like spears have a very long attack range but only average damage. Swords offer more varied and balanced stats compared to other weapons in Gladihoppers.
Unlike offensive weapons, Gladihoppers have shields for defense. Shields have two stats: damage resistance and diameter. Damage resistance reduces incoming damage if hit by the shield. Diameter, or simply the “size of the shield,” determines the area of protection the gladiator is holding.
Shields offer superior damage resistance compared to weapons of similar quality. Therefore, you will frequently see situations where weapons inflict no damage when attacking a shield. Conversely, the shield will be damaged and fall from the fighter’s hand after a certain number of shielding attempts.
