Gameplay
Upon its release, Shotgun King arguably introduced a new concept to modern chess. Chess in the game became a new version with a roguelike style and the addition of guns. Here, you play as the outcast Black King, armed with a shotgun, venturing alone into the White King’s kingdom. This is a long journey with many levels to overcome.
The board remains the same, but in each round you face a certain number of white pieces. Both sides move according to the rules of chess, so you need to be careful with each move. On each turn, move to a strategic position and use your shotgun to attack enemies. The closer the enemy, the higher the damage, so don’t waste bullets on those far away. It’s safe to say that the card system in Shotgun King is what makes this game so appealing and attracts so many players. As you know, we need to complete floors to reach the finish line. After completing each floor, we are allowed to choose a card to boost our power. Of course, the white team also receives a card.
The cards that buff the Black King are divided into groups such as:
- Weapons: Includes cards that can make shotguns more powerful by increasing their range, ammo capacity, and enemy knockback capabilities.
- Movement and Defense: Cards that increase the king’s movement range and improve the ability to escape checkmate.
- Game Changes: These are extremely powerful cards that can reduce the pressure of the game. With luck, you can alter how the white pieces function, breaking traditional game rules.
As for the white pieces, these cards can be either buffs or debuffs depending on randomness. Of course, you have to accept this, so the difficulty of each playthrough is different. This randomness is what makes Shotgun King unique and not boring, and why it’s becoming increasingly popular.
