Gameplay
Unlike many modern horror RPGs, Silent Hill 2 features classic survival gameplay with a third-person perspective. The game doesn’t focus too much on action, reflexes, or combat, but rather wants us to concentrate on the content and the character’s psychology. Here, we control James Sunderland on his journey to explore the deserted, mysterious, and terrifying town of Silent Hill.
In a strange place, all you can do is explore every nook and cranny. Search through houses, hospitals, and prisons to see if there’s anything that might help you survive. Don’t forget that Silent Hill 2 also has its share of dangers from both humans and monsters lurking around you. Note that you need to memorize the areas in the game because not every location in Silent Hill is marked on the map. Be careful and find the answers you need.
How do you fight when playing Silent Hill 2?
The combat in Silent Hill 2 isn’t highly rated, but it’s considered to add psychological pressure to both the character and the player. The fighting is often slow, cumbersome, and lacks precision. This can be simply explained by the fact that James isn’t a warrior or a soldier; he’s unlikely to be able to perform the powerful combat sequences seen in many other action games.
Usually, you only engage in combat when you encounter fog monsters. The fighting typically takes place in the streets with chases, gunfights, and slashing… Since you don’t have many skills, I advise you to run away from monsters rather than confront them. If you explore different areas, you might find suitable weapons like pistols, shotguns, wooden sticks, or steel pipes… Find a way to use your equipment and survive, my friend.
Fear gripped the entire town
If you think Silent Hill 2 evokes fear through the grotesqueness of its monsters or jump scares, you’re not entirely right. According to critics and the gaming community, this fear stems from psychological depth, emotions, and inner turmoil conveyed through the situations and memories in the storyline. The more you watch, read, and understand what the game aims to convey, the more you’ll feel terrified by everything.
Perhaps they are manifested through the following:
- The fear stems from the player’s ability to speculate, exposing the character’s guilt and their desire for punishment.
- Part of it comes from the desolate landscape and the solitude of the exploration.
- Many situations create a sense of helplessness in the player – a reality we may have experienced in life.
